How to Get Clients in 2021

I’d like to share with you, the most immediate and efficient way to get clients in 2021. And it requires no SEO work.

Getting recurring clients is all about referrals. You need to, whether you like it or not, be connected with your peers in the industry in order to really grow your business.

There are 4 types of referrals that you should actively pursue:

  1. Referrals from friends & family

Like all relationships, you have to first give in order to take. Before directly asking for referrals from people you know, ensure that you are and have been nourishing the relationships that you will later ask help from. Be there for your friends and family, take them out to lunch, listen to their problems. It’s important to others that you show your investment into them, and that you care about them through acts of gratiude.

AFTER this, feel free to ask your personal network for referrals. It’s helpful if you’ve already explained to them the type of law that you practice, in prior conversations.

2. Referrals from other lawyers

This is where the bulk of your clients are going to come from. Some strategies that you can use to get referrals from other clients are to:

  1. Join / Participate in your local Bar Association. Pick up leadership & volunteer opportunities to meet new lawyers. If you’re on the planning committee of a seminar, you have a good excuse to call on top lawyers to ask for their legal advice. That in itself is an incredible opportunity to build relationships with high profile lawyers.
  2. Contact every lawyer you know, that’s practicing in a different area of law. Schedule a chat with them, ask them for advice, learn from them and take the time to invest in those relationships. Ask them if they would be interested in exchanging mutual referrals to each other. Offer to pay a referral fee for every client that you get. This provides an economic incentive for other lawyers to help you out. It’s a win-win for both parties.
  3. Referrals from your local Bar Association

In some states/provinces, your bar association may provide a referral service. The benefits of getting clients through your bar association are the following:

  1. They are a legitimate source who are unlikely to use unethical methods to generate leads
  2. They are moderately priced, and not over priced
  3. The clients who you will find through your Bar Association are looking to hire lawyers and not just consolidate free legal advice.

4. Referrals from your clients

This is a self-generating tool to get clients. It’s really a simple formula. Treating your current customers well = getting new clients.

But “good treatment” goes beyond providing exceptional legal services. That one’s a given. In order for your clients to feel thoroughly satisfied with your legal services, you need to connect with them on a personal level. This means being there for your client. Legal disputes are really scary for your clients, so you need to calm them throughout the process, have open lines of communication and guide them through each step of the way. Answer your messages on a timely manner. It’s harder done than said, but the payoff speaks for itself.
